Entry-Level Electrician
Trainee / pre-apprentice — the starting point before or at the beginning of a formal apprenticeship. Requires little to no prior experience.

Typical Duties
- Assist licensed electricians with basic tasks on job sites

- Follow all safety protocols (OSHA basics)

Apprentice Electrician
A structured, multi-year training role (usually 4–5 years) combining paid on-the-job work with classroom instruction, registered through a union (e.g. IBEW) or a state/DOL-approved program.

- Works under a licensed electrician; independence grows yearly

Typical Duties
- Install, maintain, and repair wiring, fixtures, and electrical systems under supervision

- Troubleshoot basic electrical problems with guidance
- Complete required classroom hours (National Electrical Code, theory, safety)
- Take on increasing responsibility as skill level and hours progress
- Log hours toward journeyman licensure requirements
Requirements

Journeyman Electrician
A fully licensed electrician who has completed an apprenticeship, passed a licensing exam, and can work independently.

Typical Duties
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems independently
- Interpret and apply the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local codes
- Read complex blueprints and technical diagrams
- Perform load calculations and system design work
- Diagnose and repair complex electrical faults
- Supervise and train apprentices
- Ensure work passes inspection and meets code compliance
- Often specialize (residential, commercial, industrial, low-voltage, etc.)
Requirements
- Completion of a registered apprenticeship (typically 8,000 hours / 4–5 years)
- Passing a state or local journeyman licensing exam
- Continuing education to maintain license
Next step: many journeymen advance to Master Electrician, typically requiring 2+ years of journeyman experience plus a master exam — this level allows pulling permits and running an electrical business.
